Our Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve host experts will lead us in a walking lecture and observation experience addressing the UC Nature Reserve System while highlighting the vernal pools and endemic species located here. There are no amenities on the reserve (i.e., no water, restroom, etc.). We will break for lunch mid-day, likely after walking back to the heart of the UC campus. The afternoon expert facilitation outdoors will focus on bird observations and means by which collected information may be shared with (and benefit) communities.
The Flying WILD guide will be introduced and made available for those who wish to acquire it. Should you be interested in the $25 Flying WILD guide, please bring cash. We will have them on hand. You may also order them independently at projectwild.org

At this time (1.31.22) we have not acquired specific accessibility language from our host partners. For purposes of making required field experience choices, and in consideration of accessibility, we are providing a general description based on our initial impression. Participants interested in this field experience should complete their own in-depth review of information available with regard to the nature and type of contexts in, on, and around both the UC Merced Vernal Pools and Grasslands Reserve, and the UC Merced Campus in general.
Minimally, one should expect to park a distance of up to one mile from the gates of the reserve. Overall, while parking areas are relatively level, there are definite, significant elevation changes (stairs and/or sloping walkways) on many paths from parking areas to the reserve and among nearly all locations on the campus. Participants should expect the same level to steeply sloping (stairs and/or sloping) pathway experiences when moving from one location to another, with almost always a considerable distance between actual locations. We anticipate spending virtually no part of this field experience indoors (with the exception of a dining area (if available) and you make this choice). Accessible restrooms are located on campus, and among buildings. We believe the indoor dining areas are accessible. There are no restrooms, amenities (including seating areas) in or near the reserve area. Participants must prepare to be on the reserve without amenities for up to 3.5 hours. Undesirable conditions (rain, wind, air quality, etc.) CANCEL this field experience completely. To the extent possible, participants will be notified no later than midday on Friday, 3/4 if the field experience is expected to take place.
